Understanding the Different Types of Supplemental Medicare Insurace
While Medicare provides a good basic health plan, it can leave gaps in coverage. For those who require more coverage than the typical Medicare plans provide, there are policies available to supplement your Medicare coverage.
Types of Supplemental Coverage
There are 12 types of supplemental coverage offered by Medicare. These plans are referred to as Medigap policies. These policies will cover some of the things that are not covered by the basic Medicare plans.
Each of the 12 types of Medigap insurance policies are sold by private insurance companies. By law, they may only sell you one type of Medigap plan. For this reason it is important that whichever Medigap plan you choose fully meets the needs you are looking for.
One thing to keep in mind when searching for the right policy for you is that while the companies offering the plans vary, the coverage is always the same. There can be differences in the premiums you pay but not in the coverage you receive for those payments.
Some people think that because the coverage is the same no matter which company you choose that you should automatically choose the cheapest policy. You should keep in mind though that coverage is not the only deciding factor. You also want to choose a company with a proven track-record of excellent customer service. Health care is important and it's difficult to get everything out of it that you should if the company covering you is non-communicative or otherwise doesn't meet your expectations.
There are a few things that none of the Medigap policies will cover. These are things like dental care, vision care, hearing aids or private nurses. Be sure before signing your contract that you understand what is not covered as well as what is covered.
